Information

  • Location Kansas City, Missouri
  • Size 3,828 SF

North Kansas City School District worked with BNIM to create a modern, welcoming entrance addition and a series of enhanced interior spaces for Winnetonka High School that support connection among the student community and set a new standard in future design initiatives within the School and District. The new addition focuses on opening up and transforming Winnetonka’s entry sequence as an inviting gateway for the school and improving a spectrum of staff and support spaces through greater access to daylight, generous space, and security and technology improvements. The new entrance for Winnetonka is an inviting beacon for students that infuses school spirit and community throughout all aspects of the design, beginning with the site’s native landscaping which reflects Winnetonka’s school colors. The design also focused on expanding the school’s administrative suite, creating daylight-filled flex spaces for faculty and staff, and implementing numerous safety and technology improvements to existing building conditions.

Impact + Innovation

As Winnetonka High School has grown, interior adjacencies and entrance sequences came to no longer support Winnetonka’s students and staff, lacking desired functionality, space, and access to natural daylight. The new addition serves to alleviate the spatial deficiencies while embracing future growth and reflecting Winnetonka pride. The design team implemented numerous improvements to existing conditions of the building in order for the renewed spaces to meet current codes and standards, upgrade safety of building systems, and improve efficiency through passive sustainability. Security sequencing and technology upgrades were important considerations for this project. The design emphasized the creation of an open circulation space within the building entrance that is both welcoming and secure. BNIM worked with Winnetonka to ensure the high school was designed with streamlined security procedures that support student safety and Winnetonka’s role as a security command center for other schools across the North Kansas City School District.
