Stuit Hall Renovation
Information
In 2008, BNIM was selected by the University of Iowa to renovate Stuit Hall, or the Old Music Building, a historic structure completed in 1918. Originally designed as a hospital facility, the building was later occupied by the University’s Music Department. In 1971, the Music Department relocated to a new building, and for nearly forty years the Old Music Building sat largely unoccupied and in an increasing state of disrepair.
The Old Music Building project includes a renovation of the building’s interior and a restoration of the building envelope. BNIM’s design of the exterior restoration is intended to be sensitive to the original architecture of the building. The interior renovation work includes the build out of offices and meeting spaces, the renovation of the basement level for mechanical, electrical, telecommunications and storage rooms, and the reconfiguration of elevators, stairs, and restrooms to comply with current building codes and accessibility standards.
