Through a community-based and data-driven process, the City of Kansas City, Missouri and its project team, led by BNIM, are developing a plan for the expansion of the Downtown Streetcar Starter Line into a citywide network that creates new connections between people and places and catalyzes the revitalization of our neighborhoods.
Streetcars do more than simply improve mobility. Streetcars are about fueling economic growth. By promoting development, raising property values, attracting businesses and residents, and helping to redefine our city, streetcars benefit everyone. Streetcars function as an urban amenity that increases vitality, commerce and activity along the corridor route(s). Support for the streetcar is an investment with demonstrated returns for residents, businesses, property owners, neighborhoods and the entire region.
Impact + Innovation
Through detailed analysis and community engagement, BNIM and its partners identified key routes that would maximize the streetcar’s impact on the local economy, stimulate new investments, and encourage development along the corridor as seen in the 2024 numbers below:
- $4 Billion Completed ($4,011,400,000)
- $1.2 Billion is currently Under Construction ($1,200,400,000)
- 1.7 million square feet of new or renovated office space
- 270,000 square feet of new office space is under construction
- 9,292 apartments have been completed and added to the market
- The 9,292 apartments added approximately 13,715 residents (1.64 persons per unit at 90% occupancy)
- 1,675 apartments are under construction and will add an estimated 2,472 new residents to Downtown.
- Downtown’s residential population has increased 44% since 2014
Process
BNIM’s involvement extended beyond planning and design; they were also integral in fostering public engagement and securing community buy-in. By leading workshops, community meetings, and public forums, BNIM ensured that the project was aligned with community needs and aspirations. This participatory process not only helped in refining the streetcar design and routes but also built strong public support that was crucial for the project’s implementation.
