Quality Hill Academy
The transformation of a historic hotel into a K-5th grade charter school brings new life to an admired building in downtown Kansas City
Information
- Location Kansas City, Missouri
- Size 25,000 SF
- Completion 2016
The historic renovation of the Old Virginia Hotel and United Way offices into Quality Hill Academy provided a beautiful new life to an admired building in Kansas City, MO. The building’s grand central stair and corridor were renovated to include a white-oak wood floor. The historic paneling and other details were preserved and repaired throughout, while former offices were transformed into large classrooms. A common flexible learning space was created between the classrooms on each level of the building by using a demountable glass partition, offering a comfortable and visible space for upper and lower student buddies to practice reading, writing, and kindness together.
Impact + Innovation
Quality Hill Academy demonstrates an impactful transformation of existing non-academic spaces into functional, daylight-filled classrooms and support spaces. The fast-paced project required careful attention to detail. Starting design work on January 1, 2016, BNIM worked with Crossroads Academy to imagine and then build a new learning space, built on the lessons of the first campus, which opened on schedule in August 2016. The building received major structural improvements as well as high-efficiency lighting and mechanical replacements, providing for both long-term property durability and operation cost savings for the school.
