Located on the axial intersection of the center of Union Station and Liberty Memorial in the center of Pershing Road, the fountain, engineered by WET Design of California, performs a series of kinetic sequences that range from ambient and quietly formal, to vibrant and playful, to grand and emblematic. The choreography can support the variety of functions of Union Station, from those occurring on a daily basis, to commemorative and state occasions.
The purpose of the project was to design and construct a landmark fountain to honor Henry Wollman Bloch, retired co-founder and Chairman of the Board of H & R Block, a businessman and civic leader who has served Kansas City throughout the years. The design intent was to take fountains in Kansas City to a higher level and provide a new landmark fountain for future generations to appreciate. Fountains are a part of the Kansas City culture, as the city is known as the “City of Fountains”.
