BASIC Agency Headquarters is located on the 5th floor Makers Quarter Block D in downtown San Diego. The full floor suite consists of a full workplace eco system, offering multiple working spaces varying in size, scale, and finish. The office core was conceived of as a simple, elegant box (the BASIC box) made up of a series of smaller breakout rooms where users can meet, socialize, or work privately. This core includes a conference room, media center, break room, and a think tank room featuring 360-degrees of writable surface. A series of huddle rooms are aligned along the east side of the office, with 10-foot garage doors that provide access to small Juliette style balconies. These unique indoor/ outdoor spaces fit both the climate and the culture of San Diego.
Impact + Innovation
The overall office design was positioned in a way to best utilize the passive design strategies of the base building, Makers Quarter Block D. The building’s western elevation connects users to the main exterior circulation spine with a series of sectional garage doors. When open, these doors allow western breezes to passively flow across the floor plate. An open office along the south side of the office captures panoramic views of the surrounding east village neighborhood. The exterior venetian blind system utilizes real time sun attenuation technology to limit the amount of direct solar gain and glare. Hopper windows built within the rigorous building module again allow for passive breezes in the space. As a result of the design, BASIC Agency experienced a positive shift in company energy and employee and client experience. The company experienced a 20% increase in staff recruitment and retention following the office’s opening in Makers Quarter Block D.
Process
Opened in late 2018, Makers Quarter Block D began to attract tenants interested in workplaces that present significant energy cost savings and support human wellness. Among these tenants is BASIC Agency which sought a workspace that would help their organization grow. Block D aligned strongly with their corporate values, offering them a unique, healthy workplace environment that could work as an asset for their business, increasing staff creativity, innovation, productivity, health, and well-being, and serving as a tool to attract the type of talent needed to grow their business.
