Better Block Kansas City

Information

Prior to Better Block KC, BNIM led the Grand Boulevard Streetscape Plan, which identified and established a long-term vision for a revitalized Grand Boulevard. The initial concept was to make Grand Boulevard “grand.” The streetscape plan envisions a safe, livable and walkable downtown while incorporating complete street concepts, including a strong focus on transit and new bicycle facilities. After the master plan was completed, buy-in at the highest levels of government was not present.

Led by the Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA), “Better Block KC” was created on October 5, 2012 to further the conversation and generate the needed support for the “grand” transformation. Grand Boulevard, between 16th and 17th Street, was transformed into a living demonstration of a green, complete and livable community asset. The physical streetscape was transformed through temporary trees, lighting, landscaping, crosswalks, bike lanes, street furniture, and more. Artists, performers, local vendors, and pop-up businesses showed the potential for increasing the vitality of the area.

The DNA, along with BNIM and Better Block supporters, led an in-depth communication strategy to engage community support, showcase transformative opportunities, and encourage City leadership to support a “grand” boulevard as a game changer in Kansas City. The event successfully generated interest in implementation and maximized community stakeholder involvement. The goal of accelerating the project within the long list of unfunded citywide projects is now well underway.
