Partner in Saving Lives – LifeServe Blood Center Headquarters Opens in Johnston, Iowa

LifeServe Blood Center Headquarters celebrated its grand opening in the community of Johnston, IA, this July. The new LifeServe Blood Center Headquarters supports critical and life-saving work of the organization which serves over 170 hospitals across the region. LifeServe collaborated with BNIM to envision and design a facility that would provide a healthy, supportive, functional headquarters office space for the organization’s employees while establishing a welcoming community presence in Johnston that encourages and raises awareness for blood donation.

The design team coordinated closely with LifeServe, specialty suppliers and fabricators, the contractor, and full project team to understand LifeServe’s processes and respond to organizational goals. The result is a building that enhances workflows, building efficiencies and intersections, and LifeServe’s overall approach in addressing the complexities of blood movement and processing.
The new facility seeks to strengthen connection to community, demonstrate LifeServe’s mission, and encourage meaningful interaction between LifeServe staff, volunteers, and donors. Design strategies to support human health and well-being were thoughtfully implemented within the building to enhance employee and donor experiences. The facility brings generous daylight into office and donor spaces, while ensuring optimal comfort through a sunscreen on the south façade that reduces glare. An exterior terrace, staff courtyard, community-facing donor garden as well as a spectrum of workspaces and collaborative areas create a welcoming spirit of space within the new headquarters building.
“We wanted to create an environment that is much more spa-like. We wanted to get away from the feel of being in a clinic and make donating blood a much more pleasing experience.” – Stacy Sime, LifeServe Blood Center President and CEO
