Kevin Nordmeyer Shares his Hopes, Fears and Disruptors for 2022 in Architect Magazine

BNIM Principal, Kevin Nordmeyer shared his hopes and fears for 2022, as well as what he predicts will be the biggest disruptors. Architect Magazine reached out to 18 architecture and design leaders, movers, and shakers to ask them their thoughts on what big disruptors are in store for 2022, whether it be ideas, policies, technologies, projects or people. Architects and designers of all backgrounds were able to share their experiences and ideas. Imani Dixon, an associate at Lamar Johnson Collaborative, shared their fears about the possibility of the industry moving away from conversations on justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. Since the start of the pandemic, our society has collectively become more aware of the inequities inside and out of architecture and design. Dixon hopes that as time goes on, the industry will encourage and uplift the voices of young designers and architects to address the collective consciousness of inequities around us.

Kevin also acknowledges the recent rise in awareness of inequities in our society. In recent years various movements such as Black Lives Matter, Stop Asian Hate and Me Too have reawakened an awareness for equity and inclusion. He believes that these movements should disrupt and drive architects and designers to reimagine the spaces we create and occupy. Kevin emphasizes his hopes for greater participation in inclusive design for individuals engaging in design, construction, and use of buildings that will elevate the human experience. He believes that inclusive design should become a crucial component of sustainable design to create spaces that are gracious, empathetic and thoughtful to the diverse needs of individuals.
