KC City Council passes two resolutions for people and planet

KC City Council passes two resolutions for people and planet

Following community outreach initiatives led by city organizations and support provided by Kansas City residents, the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri, recently passed two resolutions that focus on advancing initiatives for both people and planet:

Vision Zero Resolution: The Vision Zero resolution states that traffic violence will be treated as a matter of public health and equity. The resolution sets out to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030 and asks that the City use data to adapt infrastructure and policy to implement this initiative.

City’s Climate Protection Plan: The resolution for updates to Kansas City’s Climate Protection Plan will incorporate new greenhouse gas reduction goals, resiliency, and equity into future City policy and operations. The City Climate Protection Plan resolution received resounding support with over 100 individual testimonies and nine City Council members and Kansas City’s Mayor voting ‘for’ the resolution.

These resolutions help support positive change in Kansas City through climate action and community health and resiliency. BNIM is committed to reducing embodied carbon dioxide emissions in Kansas City and across all projects by 65% in 2030 and 100% by 2040. Last year, BNIM implemented a Sustainability Action Plan that requires all projects to begin with a set of clear performance goals and to report metrics through the life of the project in six categories: Energy, Water, Ecology, Wellness, Equity, and Resources.
