Kansas City’s Climate Protection & Resiliency Plan (CPRP) Adopted by City Council
The recent Kansas City Council passage of Resolution 220596, adopting Kansas City Missouri’s Climate Protection & Resiliency Plan (CPRP), expands on the KCMO 2008 Climate Action Plan, to go beyond emissions reductions and develop climate justice and equity focused goals around mobility, energy supply, natural systems, homes and buildings, food, and waste & materials. BNIM staff, the AIA-KC, USGBC Central Plains, the Sierra Club, and many others helped develop the content of these plans and actively advocated for adoption.

This plan was informed in part by the Climate Action Kansas City Regional Action Plan, working to align and prioritize the measures based on local stakeholder input gathered through nearly two years of engagement and public comments, forums, and testimony.
This is the most significant municipal climate plan to be adopted since the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (H.R. 5376). Kansas City’s Climate Plan demonstrates the role municipalities and States will have in closing the remaining carbon gap of 0.5 billion metric tons by 2030.
While the CPRP has not yet become the specific policies nor the actions it recommends, it provides the City and its citizens and businesses with the clear goals, milestones, strategies, and priorities needed to shape policies and actions for years to come and puts Kansas City firmly on the path to become a climate neutral municipality by 2040 while generating new high-quality jobs and improving health and quality of life for all.
