Kansas City International Airport Parking Garage Receives the Prestigious 2024 American Architecture Award
The Kansas City International Airport Parking Garage in Kansas City, MO, received The American Architecture Award for 2024 from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. The American Architecture Awards recognize design excellence in architecture and urbanism in the United States, demonstrating new developments in design and underscoring current cutting-edge processes in today’s design thinking.
The new Kansas City International (KCI) Airport parking garage and terminal introduce a transformational new era of the KCI Airport and represent the Kansas City region on a global scale. BNIM, in a collaborative design-build partnership with JE Dunn, completed the new 2.5 million SF parking garage which accompanies the newly constructed single terminal designed by SOM. BNIM and JE Dunn coordinated efforts with SOM to develop a cohesive compositional relationship between the parking garage and terminal through structural rhythm and facades, enhancing KCI Airport’s presence. The KCI Parking Garage establishes the initial view of the new KCI Airport visible from I-29 highway and provides 6,219 parking stalls to accommodate visitors.
Key goals for the parking garage included enhancing quality passenger experience, initiating clear intuitive wayfinding, creating convenient access to multiple modes of transportation, and representing Kansas City’s regional identity. Vehicular speed ramps to all levels of the garage are stacked to the far eastern façade away from the terminal, allowing for safer pedestrian use as visitors move from west to east through the garage toward the terminal entrance. Features such as electric vehicle charging stations, ease of access to multiple modes of transport, and a smart parking guidance system also seek to improve user experience within the garage.
