Bob Berkebile to serve as a juror for the 2020 AIA COTE Top Ten Awards
Bob Berkebile, founder of AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE), will serve as a juror for the 2020 AIA COTE Top Ten Awards in the organization’s 30th anniversary year.
In 1989, Bob co-presented Critical Planet Rescue (CPR) at the AIA Convention in St. Louis. The CPR measure called on the AIA to develop a strategic plan that would guide architects toward more sustainable practices and to sponsor industry research focused on sustainable design. CPR was received with broad support and attracted attention and funding from the EPA. In 1990, the AIA board endorsed the creation of the committee, chaired by Bob, to address environmental concerns in the architectural community through proactive practice rather than passive concern.
Building on the committee’s research efforts, COTE launched its Top Ten Green Projects program on Earth Day in 1997 as a way to provide case study projects for practitioners to research and reference. These projects have demonstrated over time that beauty and performance are not mutually exclusive, and they exemplify the idea that sustainability is essential to design excellence.
BNIM encourages firms to submit their projects and reveal the concepts behind the design and sustainable practices that brought them to life. Join us in the built environment resolution as we continue on the path towards well-being.
