BNIM Principals Carey Nagle and Kevin Nordmeyer elevated to College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects

DES MOINES, IA (March 4, 2024) —BNIM is thrilled to announce Carey Nagle and Kevin Nordmeyer have been elevated to The College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA). Nagle and Nordmeyer are Principals in BNIM’s Des Moines studio whose synergistic strengths, exemplary leadership, and holistic approach to design excellence elevate BNIM’s core purpose and advance the profession. Nagle and Nordmeyer are among 98 architects elevated to Fellow, the highest AIA membership honor, for their significant contributions to architecture and society. The newly elevated members of the 2024 College of Fellows will be honored at the AIA Awards Gala, June 7, 2024, at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C.

Carey Nagle, FAIA, LEED AP, advocates for the values of AIA in practice to positively shape communities and sets benchmarks for design excellence through high-performance innovation, mentorship, and policy. In his 20+ years in the architectural profession, Nagle has held an integral role in transforming the work of BNIM through design and practice leadership, achieving pivotal design outcomes and setting new sustainable precedents in Iowa and beyond. Nagle’s projects have advanced strategies for innovative, replicable, and financially accessible high-performance solutions.

Nagle’s work includes the Iowa Utilities Board-Office of Consumer Advocate, AIA COTE Top Ten and COTE Top Ten Plus recipient and state-wide model for cost-effective energy efficiency; American Enterprise Group Headquarters Renovation, AIA National Honor Award recipient; and The University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art, a new resilient cultural arts destination bringing a world-renowned collection back to its campus community after 14 years.

Kevin Nordmeyer, FAIA, LEED AP, leverages design excellence and an empathetic design process to create work that inspires change and enhances the human condition. In his over 30 years of practice, Nordmeyer has pioneered integrated sustainable design strategies that have achieved significant green building milestones for the profession in the state of Iowa and region, including Iowa’s first sustainable buildings in the mid-1990s, Iowa’s first National AIA COTE Top Ten recipient, and Iowa’s first LEED Platinum collegiate facilities. His approach to design excellence, in concert with his leadership, advocacy, teaching, and research, continues to expand sustainable and inclusive design standards across the profession.

Nordmeyer’s work includes the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities Office and Training Facility, the first AIA COTE Top Ten Award recipient in Iowa, completed while with RDG Planning & Design; Lutheran Church of Hope, Grimes, American Architecture Award recipient; and the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center at Drake University, AIA Iowa Impact Award and Green GOOD DESIGN Award recipient and a model for inclusive design for the profession. Nordmeyer co-authored ALL, a publication and guidebook that presents inclusive design strategies of the Tom and Ruth Harkin Center and aims to elevate built environments guided by a spirit of empathy for people and the planet.
