BNIM presents at SCUP Southern 2022 Regional Conference: A Teaching Museum for Resiliency, Community Partnerships, and Arts Exploration

BNIM Principal Carey Nagle, AIA, LEED AP, and Associate Levi Robb, AIA, will present alongside Academic Outreach Coordinator at the Stanley Museum of Art, Kathryn Reuter, at this year’s SCUP (The Society for College and University Planning) Southern 2022 Regional Conference, taking place Feb 8 – 10 (rescheduled). The session, entitled A Teaching Museum for Resiliency, Community Partnerships, and Arts Exploration on Feb. 10, from 10:50 a.m. – 11:50 a.m., will explore the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art’s dynamic new teaching museum as a model for environmental resiliency, connectivity, and arts exploration for the campus and community. The Stanley Museum of Art brings an art museum presence to the University of Iowa campus after historic flooding 14 years ago and serves library and laboratory for the arts centered on a human-purposed user experience, maximized value, flexible galleries, and the teaching and research of collections.

SCUP attendees for this session can earn AIA LU 1.0 Unit (SCUPS22C1986) and AICP CM 1.0 Unit, and will gain the following key learning outcomes:

1. Navigate site selection and challenges with respect to establishing important campus connections, resiliency planning, environmental protocols, and design strategies for arts conservation.

2. Discuss a collaborative, integrated design process involving multiple stakeholders to maximize value within a modest budget and create a cultural arts facility equipped for teaching, research, and public use.

3. Explain how to interweave design for the cultural arts with instructional design to leverage spaces as teaching tools for meeting pedagogical goals.

4. Generate campus and state-wide engagement through developing collaborative partnerships, establishing campus connection and outreach, and supporting multi-disciplinary learning opportunities.
