BNIM Presents a Case Study of the UI Stanley Museum of Art
This year’s annual AIA Iowa Procrastinators Ball will feature a case study on the Stanley Museum of Art at The University of Iowa. Design team members Carey Nagle, Levi Robb, and Tom Feldmann will present the project’s history from the flooding in 2008, which shuttered its former location, to the design and construction process of the new building. This year’s in-person event on Tuesday, May 24th between 9:00 and and 3:00 pm will include interactive educational sessions and a tour of the Stanley Art Museum located at 160 West Burlington Street, Iowa City.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to understand resiliency implementation planning and strategies with respect to flood conditions and maintaining an art conservation environment.
- Participants will understand envelope assemblies and their implementation towards the delivery of architectural concepts, mitigation of vapor drive and support art conservation environment as well as construction methodology, sequencing and material considerations
- Participants will gain understanding on how the holistic building design works as an integrated tool that encourages social interaction between the museum and the general public by providing a variety of spaces – such as teaching classrooms and galleries, community terraces and and multi-functional lobby that expand the museums message and learning opportunities to the university and surrounding community
- Participants will understand successful approaches to daylighting and achieving a balanced approach in a museum condition in which art conservation spaces require limited access to daylight and UV while serving the needs of the occupant to have access to daylight and its use as an experiential and orientation tool.
