Rooted in community, the design for Asilong Christian High School has been a cause for positive transformation within its county of West Pokot, Kenya. The project aims to address essential needs by providing clean water access, renewable energy solutions, and an academic environment that embodies opportunities for learning and community. As a high school campus for 320 students upon full buildout, Asilong Christian High School provides facilities including classrooms, offices, dormitories, and teacher housing. Design constraints and opportunities for Asilong are dictated by the place: zero net energy, zero net water, emphasis on regional materials and local labor, and community engagement to ensure generational success. Thoughtful building massing, material selection, passive strategies, shading, and ample space for solar panels create a deeply sustainable campus that support human wellness and natural systems. The project is an AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project Award recipient.
