Follow the journey of “Mural” back to the Stanley Museum of Art

Recently, the New York Times shared the history behind artist Jackson Pollock’s renowned “Mural,” and its return on tour to the Guggenheim in New York City, in Jackson Pollock, Before the Drip by Jason Farago. “Mural” has been on a visiting tour of various art institutions across the country and world. Donated by Peggy Guggenheim to the Stanley Museum of Art in 1951, “Mural” has been a long-time resident at the University of Iowa [ 1 ]. As construction is underway for the new home of the Stanley Museum of Art on the University of Iowa campus with plans for completion in 2022, the Museum’s collections have been spending time in safe keeping and taking temporary residency at the Stanley Visual Classroom on University of Iowa campus and the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, IA [ 2 ]. In the case of “Mural,” the piece visited the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles for conservation and restoration before beginning its travels while the Stanley Museum of Art’s campus presence is revived in a new state-of-the-art facility [ 3 ]. The New York Times feature, Jackson Pollock, Before the Drip, as well as articles from IowaNow and ArtNews, detail the timeline of “Mural” throughout its decade-long journey home to the Stanley Museum of Art. As BNIM’s team works with the University toward the completion of the Stanley Museum of Art facility next year, we wanted to take a look back at the eventful tour of “Mural” as the University of Iowa campus waits for its return.
